The ne explétif

Le ne explétif

B2fr22 min

What you'll learn

  • Recognise the non-negative ne
  • Know its triggers
  • Judge the register

Tips for this lesson

  • The ne explétif looks negative but is not — there's no pas with it.
  • Main triggers: avant que, à moins que, de peur que, and after comparatives.
  • It is optional in modern French and mostly appears in careful writing and speech.
Step 1 of 6
1Reading

In context

Read. Each sentence contains ne — but none of them is negative.

Partons avant qu'il ne pleuve. Je crains qu'il ne soit trop tard. Il est plus intelligent qu'on ne le pense. À moins qu'elle ne change d'avis, nous partirons.

Step 2 of 6
2The pattern

The pattern — ne without pas

After certain expressions, ne appears with no negative meaning at all. The absence of pas is your clue.

The ne explétif is a ne that appears without pas and carries no negative meaning. It's a stylistic leftover from older French, and it appears after specific triggers: the conjunctions avant que, à moins que, de peur que, de crainte que; verbs of fearing (craindre que, avoir peur que); and after comparatives (plus/moins … que). "Partons avant qu'il ne pleuve" simply means let's leave before it rains — not before it doesn't rain. Your diagnostic is simple: if there is no pas, there is no negation. In modern French it is entirely optional, and omitting it is perfectly correct — it belongs to careful, formal, or literary register.

TriggerExampleMeaning
avant queavant qu'il ne pleuvebefore it rains
à moins queà moins qu'elle ne change d'avisunless she changes her mind
craindre / avoir peur queje crains qu'il ne soit tardI'm afraid it's late
comparativeplus grand qu'on ne pensebigger than people think

Partons avant qu'il ne pleuve.

Let's leave before it rains.

Not 'before it doesn't rain' — the ne is empty.

Je crains qu'il ne soit trop tard.

I'm afraid it's too late.

Fearing verb → ne explétif; still no negation.

Il est plus intelligent qu'on ne le pense.

He's more intelligent than people think.

After a comparative.

Je crains qu'il ne vienne pas.

I'm afraid he won't come.

Here pas IS present — this one is genuinely negative. Contrast with the example above.

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Reading « avant qu'il ne pleuve » as 'before it doesn't rain'.It means 'before it rains' — the ne has no negative force.

The absence of pas is the signal: no pas, no negation.

  • Je crains qu'il ne soit pas tard. (meaning 'I fear it's late')Je crains qu'il ne soit tard.

Adding pas flips the meaning to 'I fear it is NOT late' — a genuine negation, not the explétif.

  • Parce qu'il ne soit malade...Parce qu'il est malade...

parce que is not a trigger — it takes the indicative and no explétif.

Exceptions & à retenir

  • It is genuinely optional

Partons avant qu'il pleuve is perfectly correct. The explétif adds a formal, careful tone but is never required in contemporary French.

  • ne … que is something else entirely

Je n'ai que dix euros means 'I only have ten euros' — a restrictive structure meaning 'only', not a negation and not an explétif. Three different jobs for ne worth keeping apart.

  • Literary ne can stand alone as a real negation

In formal writing, some verbs (pouvoir, savoir, oser, cesser) negate with ne alone: je ne saurais dire (I couldn't say). This IS negative, despite having no pas — a rare, literary exception to the diagnostic.

Astuces & mémo

  • The one test that always works: look for pas. No pas means the ne is explétif and the sentence is positive.
  • You never have to produce it — omitting it is correct modern French. Focus on recognising it in reading and listening.
  • Note the overlap: most explétif triggers (avant que, à moins que) are also subjunctive triggers from the connectors lesson.

  1. 1.Que voulez-vous finir avant qu'il ne soit trop tard ?
