« Je suis fatigué. » → Il a dit qu'il était fatigué. — « J'ai fini. » → Elle a dit qu'elle avait fini. — « Je viendrai demain. » → Il a dit qu'il viendrait le lendemain.
Reported speech in the past (concordance des temps)
Le discours indirect au passé
What you'll learn
- Backshift tenses correctly
- Shift time expressions
- Report a full conversation
Tips for this lesson
- Présent → imparfait, passé composé → plus-que-parfait, futur → conditionnel présent.
- Imparfait and plus-que-parfait do NOT shift — they are already as far back as it goes.
- Time words shift too: demain → le lendemain, hier → la veille.
In context
Read. Notice every tense drops one step back when the reporting verb is in the past.
The pattern — every tense drops one rung
When the reporting verb is in the past, shift the reported tense one step back. Two tenses have nowhere further to go.
At B1 you reported speech with a present reporting verb (il dit que...), where nothing shifts. When the reporting verb is in the past (il a dit que..., elle m'a demandé si...), every reported tense drops one step back — this is the concordance des temps. Présent → imparfait, passé composé → plus-que-parfait, futur → conditionnel présent, futur antérieur → conditionnel passé. Two tenses don't move, because they're already as far back as French goes: the imparfait and the plus-que-parfait stay unchanged. Time expressions shift too: demain → le lendemain, hier → la veille, aujourd'hui → ce jour-là, maintenant → à ce moment-là.
| Direct speech | Reported (past) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| présent | imparfait | « je suis » → qu'il était |
| passé composé | plus-que-parfait | « j'ai fini » → qu'il avait fini |
| futur simple | conditionnel présent | « je viendrai » → qu'il viendrait |
| imparfait | imparfait (no change) | « j'étais » → qu'il était |
| plus-que-parfait | plus-que-parfait (no change) | « j'avais vu » → qu'il avait vu |
| Direct | Reported |
|---|---|
| aujourd'hui | ce jour-là |
| demain | le lendemain |
| hier | la veille |
| maintenant | à ce moment-là |
Il a dit qu'il était fatigué.
He said he was tired.
présent (suis) → imparfait (était).
Elle a dit qu'elle avait fini.
She said she had finished.
passé composé (ai fini) → plus-que-parfait (avait fini).
Il a dit qu'il viendrait le lendemain.
He said he would come the next day.
futur → conditionnel, and demain → le lendemain.
Elle a dit qu'elle était déjà venue.
She said she had already come.
plus-que-parfait stays as it is — nowhere further back to go.
Erreurs fréquentes
- Il a dit qu'il est fatigué.Il a dit qu'il était fatigué.
After a past reporting verb the présent must shift to the imparfait.
- Il a dit qu'il viendra demain.Il a dit qu'il viendrait le lendemain.
Both parts shift: futur → conditionnel, and demain → le lendemain.
- Elle a dit qu'elle avait été fatiguée. (reporting « j'étais fatiguée »)Elle a dit qu'elle était fatiguée.
The imparfait does not shift — it's already at the bottom of the ladder.
Exceptions & à retenir
General truths may keep the présent
Il a dit que la Terre tourne autour du Soleil — for permanent facts, speakers often keep the present. Both forms are acceptable; the backshifted version is never wrong.
Questions and commands backshift too
« Tu viens ? » → il m'a demandé si je venais. « Viens ! » → il m'a dit de venir (the de + infinitive form is unaffected by tense shifts).
The subjunctive doesn't backshift in modern French
Il a voulu que je vienne (not que je vinsse) — the literary subjonctif imparfait has disappeared from modern usage, so the present subjunctive stays.
Astuces & mémo
- Check the reporting verb first. Present (il dit que) → nothing shifts. Past (il a dit que) → everything shifts one rung.
- Remember the two tenses that stay put: imparfait and plus-que-parfait. If you're already there, you stay there.
- After fixing the verbs, sweep the sentence again for time words — they're the most commonly forgotten half of the rule.
