The passive voice

La voix passive

What you'll learn

  • Form the passive
  • Introduce the agent
  • Prefer on when natural

Tips for this lesson

  • Passive = être (in any tense) + past participle, agreeing with the subject.
  • The agent takes par for actions, de for states and emotions.
  • French uses the passive far less than English — on is often the natural choice.
Step 1 of 6
1Reading

In context

Read. Notice être + participle, and how the participle agrees with the subject.

Cette maison a été construite en 1900. Les résultats seront annoncés demain. Ce professeur est respecté de tous ses élèves. Ici, on parle français.

Step 2 of 6
2The pattern

The pattern — être + participle, and when to avoid it

Form the passive with être + participle. But check first whether on would sound more natural.

The passive voice puts the receiver of an action into the subject position. Form it with être + past participle, and the participle agrees with the subject like an adjective: "cette maison a été construite" (feminine → construite). être can be in any tense, which is what sets the time frame: est construite (present), a été construite (past), sera construite (future). The agent — who did it — is introduced by par for a real action ("écrit par Victor Hugo"), but by de after verbs of state or emotion (connu, aimé, respecté, couvert, entouré). Crucially, French uses the passive far less than English. Where English says "French is spoken here", French prefers the active on: "ici, on parle français".

Agent markerUsed forExample
para concrete actionécrit par Hugo
destate or emotionrespecté de tous

Cette maison a été construite en 1900.

This house was built in 1900.

Feminine subject → construite.

Ce roman a été écrit par Victor Hugo.

This novel was written by Victor Hugo.

Concrete action → par.

Il est respecté de ses collègues.

He is respected by his colleagues.

Feeling/state → de, not par.

Ici, on parle français.

French is spoken here.

French prefers on where English uses a passive.

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Cette maison a été construit en 1900.Cette maison a été construite en 1900.

The participle agrees with the subject in the passive — maison is feminine, so construite.

  • Il est respecté par tous.Il est respecté de tous.

Verbs of feeling or state (respecter, aimer, connaître) take de for the agent, not par.

  • Le français est parlé ici. (as an everyday sign or remark)Ici, on parle français.

Grammatically correct but unidiomatic — French strongly prefers on in everyday contexts where English uses a passive.

Exceptions & à retenir

  • Only verbs with a direct object can be passivised

Verbs taking à (téléphoner à, parler à, obéir à) have no passive form in French: 'she was phoned' must become on lui a téléphoné, never elle a été téléphonée.

  • Pronominal verbs as a passive substitute

Ce livre se vend bien (This book sells well) / Ça ne se dit pas (That isn't said) — a reflexive construction often replaces the passive for general truths.

  • The agent is often omitted entirely

Les résultats seront annoncés demain — no par phrase needed when the doer is obvious or unimportant. Roughly 80% of real French passives have no stated agent.

Astuces & mémo

  • Two checks every time: does the participle agree with the subject, and is the agent introduced with par or de?
  • Before writing a passive, ask whether on would sound more natural. In speech and everyday writing, it usually does.
  • The de group is small and learnable: connu, aimé, respecté, admiré, couvert, entouré, suivi, précédé, accompagné.

3Q&A drill

  • Q3construit ___ un architecte
    A____________
