Le conditionnel passé (regrets & reproach)

Le conditionnel passé : regrets et reproches

B2fr25 min

What you'll learn

  • Express regret about the past
  • Make a reproach
  • Form the conditionnel passé

Tips for this lesson

  • Conditionnel passé = conditionnel of avoir/être + past participle.
  • j'aurais dû = I should have; j'aurais pu = I could have — the two highest-value phrases.
  • It expresses what did NOT happen — the unrealised past.
Step 1 of 6
1Reading

In context

Read. Every sentence describes something that did NOT actually happen.

J'aurais aimé venir, mais j'étais malade. Tu aurais me prévenir. Nous serions partis plus tôt, mais il pleuvait. Elle aurait pu réussir avec plus de travail.

Step 2 of 6
2The pattern

The pattern — the unrealised past

Conditionnel of avoir/être + past participle. It always describes something that did not happen.

The conditionnel passé expresses what would have happened — but did not. Build it with the conditionnel of avoir or être (j'aurais, tu aurais, il serait...) plus the past participle: "j'aurais aimé venir" (I would have liked to come — but I didn't). Two combinations are especially useful. devoir in the conditionnel passé means "should have": "tu aurais dû me prévenir" (you should have told me) — a reproach or hindsight advice. pouvoir means "could have": "elle aurait pu réussir" (she could have succeeded — but didn't). Same auxiliary choice and agreement rules as every compound tense you already know.

Auxiliary (conditionnel)+ ParticipleMeaning
j'auraisaiméj'aurais aimé (I would have liked)
tu auraistu aurais dû (you should have)
elle auraitpuelle aurait pu (she could have)
nous serionspartisnous serions partis (we would have left)

J'aurais aimé venir.

I would have liked to come.

Implies: but I didn't come.

Tu aurais dû me prévenir.

You should have told me.

devoir → reproach or hindsight advice.

Elle aurait pu réussir.

She could have succeeded.

pouvoir → an unrealised possibility.

Nous serions partis plus tôt.

We would have left earlier.

partir takes être — agreement applies (partis).

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Je voudrais venir hier.J'aurais voulu venir hier.

For a past regret you need the conditionnel PASSÉ — the present conditionnel refers to now, not the past.

  • J'ai dû partir plus tôt. (meaning: I should have)J'aurais dû partir plus tôt.

j'ai dû = I had to (it happened). j'aurais dû = I should have (it didn't happen). Very different meanings.

  • Nous aurions partis plus tôt.Nous serions partis plus tôt.

partir is an être verb — use the conditionnel of être (serions), not avoir.

Exceptions & à retenir

  • It completes si-clause type 3

Si j'avais su, je serais venu (If I had known, I would have come) — si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel passé. That's the next lesson; this tense is the second half of it.

  • Journalistic use for unverified past claims

Le suspect aurait quitté le pays (The suspect reportedly left the country) — as with the present conditionnel, the past form marks unconfirmed information in news writing.

  • Reproach softens with the conditionnel présent

tu devrais partir (you should leave — advice for now) vs tu aurais dû partir (you should have left — reproach about the past). Same verb, different time reference, very different social effect.

Astuces & mémo

  • The two phrases to master first: j'aurais dû (I should have) and j'aurais pu (I could have). They cover most real regret and reproach situations.
  • Everything you know about compound tenses transfers: same auxiliary choice, same participles, same agreement rules — only the auxiliary's tense changes.
  • Remember the implication: the conditionnel passé always signals the thing did NOT happen.
Step 3 of 6
