Passé composé vs imparfait

Passé composé ou imparfait ?

B1fr28 min

What you'll learn

  • Choose the right past tense
  • Use trigger words as clues
  • Combine both tenses in one story

Tips for this lesson

  • Passé composé = the foreground events (what happened, one after another).
  • Imparfait = the background (description, ongoing state, what was already true).
  • Picture a stage: imparfait paints the scenery, passé composé is the actors moving on it.
Step 1 of 6
1Reading

In context

Read. Notice imparfait paints the scene (weather, mood, ongoing state) while passé composé moves the story forward.

Il faisait beau et j'étais content. Je me promenais dans le parc quand soudain, j'ai vu un vieil ami. Nous avons parlé pendant une heure. Il portait un manteau bleu et il souriait tout le temps.

Step 2 of 6
2The pattern

The pattern — foreground vs background

Passé composé = what happened (the events). Imparfait = the scene they happened in (description, ongoing state).

You already know both tenses separately — this lesson is about choosing between them in the same story. Think of a story like a stage: the imparfait paints the scenery — the weather, how people looked, what was already going on, ongoing states and habits ("il faisait beau", "j'étais content"). The passé composé is the actors moving on that stage — the actual events that happened, one after another, pushing the story forward ("j'ai vu un ami", "nous avons parlé"). A classic pattern: an ongoing action (imparfait) gets interrupted by a sudden event (passé composé) — "je me promenais [background] quand soudain, j'ai vu [event] un vieil ami."

JobTenseSignals
Foreground eventpassé composésoudain, tout à coup, un jour, puis, ensuite
Background descriptionimparfaittoujours, souvent, d'habitude, pendant que + a scene

Il pleuvait quand je suis sorti.

It was raining when I went out.

Background (pleuvait) + interrupting event (suis sorti).

Hier, j'ai visité trois musées.

Yesterday, I visited three museums.

A clear finished sequence of events → passé composé.

Quand j'étais enfant, j'habitais à Nice.

When I was a child, I lived in Nice.

Ongoing state over a period → imparfait, not a single event.

J'ai su la vérité hier.

I found out the truth yesterday.

savoir in passé composé shifts meaning: 'found out', a specific moment — vs je savais (I knew, an ongoing state).

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Narrating an entire story only in passé composé, with no scene-setting.Mix in imparfait for description: 'Il faisait beau, j'étais content, et j'ai vu un ami.'

A story with only passé composé sounds like a list of events with no atmosphere or context.

  • Narrating an entire story only in imparfait, so nothing actually happens.Use passé composé for the actual turning points/events in the story.

Imparfait alone describes a scene forever — it never moves the plot forward.

  • Je savais la vérité hier. (meaning 'I found out')J'ai su la vérité hier.

Certain verbs (savoir, connaître, vouloir, pouvoir) shift meaning between the two tenses — savoir in PC = 'found out', not 'knew'.

Exceptions & à retenir

  • A repeated action can still be passé composé if it's a counted/closed set

J'ai visité ce musée trois fois (I visited this museum three times) uses passé composé even though it repeats — because it's a closed, countable set of events, not an open-ended habit (which would be imparfait: je visitais souvent ce musée).

  • The verb-meaning shift group

savoir/connaître/vouloir/pouvoir/devoir all shift meaning in passé composé vs imparfait — this is one of the more advanced but high-value points of the whole contrast. Learn the pairs as vocabulary: je savais (knew) / j'ai su (found out); je pouvais (was able to, generally) / j'ai pu (managed to, this time).

  • This contrast doesn't apply to every past narrative equally

Very short, purely factual statements ('Hier, j'ai mangé.') don't need imparfait at all — the contrast matters most in longer narratives with both description and events.

Astuces & mémo

  • The classic scaffold: soudain/tout à coup (suddenly) signal passé composé; souvent/d'habitude/toujours signal imparfait — useful, but the real test is foreground vs background meaning.
  • Practice with the 'quand...' interruption pattern: [imparfait — ongoing] + quand + [passé composé — sudden event].
  • A few verbs change meaning by tense: savoir (knew → found out), connaître (knew → met for the first time), vouloir (wanted → tried/refused), pouvoir (could → managed to).
