- The endings are the same for every verb: -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont.

2The pattern
The pattern — infinitive stem + endings
Take the infinitive as the stem (drop the final -e for -re verbs), add the future endings.
The futur simple expresses future events, predictions and plans — a bit more formal or definite-sounding than futur proche (aller + infinitive), and common in writing and formal speech. To form it, use the infinitive as the stem (for -re verbs, drop the final -e: vendre → vendr-) and add the same endings for every verb: -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont. A handful of very frequent verbs have irregular stems you simply memorise: être → ser-, avoir → aur-, aller → ir-, faire → fer-, venir → viendr-.

Regular -er verb: infinitive + ai.
Nous vendrons la maison.

-re verb: drop the final -e (vendre → vendr-) before adding -ons.
Il sera content.
He will be happy.
Irregular stem ser- (from être), regular ending -a.
Ils feront un voyage.
They will take a trip.
Irregular stem fer- (from faire).
Erreurs fréquentes
- Je êtrerai content.Je serai content.
être doesn't use its infinitive as the stem — memorise the irregular ser-.
- Nous allerons à Paris.Nous irons à Paris.
aller's future stem is ir-, not aller- — one of the five key irregulars.
- Si j'aurai le temps, je viendrai.Si j'ai le temps, je viendrai.
After si (if), French uses the PRESENT tense, never the future — even though the second half of the sentence is future.
Exceptions & à retenir
More irregular stems beyond the top five
pouvoir → pourr-, vouloir → voudr-, savoir → saur-, devoir → devr-, voir → verr-. You'll pick these up gradually as you use them more.
si + futur is never correct
The 'if' clause (si + verb) always stays in the present, even when talking about the future: si tu viens, je serai content (not si tu viendras). A fixed, important exception.
Futur simple vs futur proche — a register choice
Futur proche (je vais parler) is the default in everyday speech for the near future. Futur simple (je parlerai) is more common in writing, formal speech, and for more distant or less certain futures.
Astuces & mémo
- The endings (-ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont) look almost identical to the present tense of avoir — a handy memory hook.
- For -re verbs, just drop the final -e from the infinitive before adding endings: prendre → prendr- → je prendrai.
- Memorise the five irregular stems as a chant: ser-, aur-, ir-, fer-, viendr- — they cover être, avoir, aller, faire, venir.
