Indirect object pronouns: lui, leur

Les pronoms compléments d'objet indirect

A2fr22 min

What you'll learn

  • Say to/for whom
  • Distinguish direct from indirect objects
  • Drop the redundant à + person

Tips for this lesson

  • lui = to him/her (singular); leur = to them (plural) — same form for both genders.
  • Verbs like parler à, téléphoner à, donner à, écrire à take indirect objects.
  • lui/leur go before the verb, exactly like le/la/les.
Step 1 of 6
1Reading

In context

Read. Notice lui/leur replace 'à + a person' and sit before the verb, just like le/la/les.

Je parle à mon frère. Je lui parle souvent. J'écris à mes parents ; je leur écris chaque semaine. Tu donnes le livre à Marie ? Oui, je lui donne le livre.

Step 2 of 6
2The pattern

The pattern — lui/leur before the verb

lui and leur replace 'à + a person' and go before the verb, exactly like le/la/les.

lui and leur replace an indirect object — a person introduced by à ("I speak to my brother" → "I speak to him"). Use lui for one person (he or she — the same word covers both!), and leur for more than one person. Just like le/la/les, these pronouns go directly before the conjugated verb, and once you've used lui/leur, you don't repeat the à + person phrase. Common verbs that take an indirect object: parler à, téléphoner à, donner à, écrire à, dire à, demander à.

ReplacingPronounExample
à + one person (he/she)luije lui parle
à + several peopleleurje leur parle
Verb + à (takes indirect object)Meaning
parler àto speak to
téléphoner àto phone
donner àto give to
écrire àto write to
dire àto say/tell to

Je parle à Marc. → Je lui parle.

I talk to Marc. → I talk to him.

lui works for 'him' — and also for 'her'!

Elle téléphone à ses parents. → Elle leur téléphone.

She calls her parents. → She calls them.

leur — plural, same form regardless of gender.

Je lui donne le cadeau.

I give him/her the gift.

lui — could mean 'him' or 'her', context tells you which.

Nous leur écrivons souvent.

We write to them often.

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Je le parle.Je lui parle.

    parler à takes an INDIRECT object (à + person) — use lui/leur, not le/la.

  • Je téléphone à leur.Je leur téléphone.

leur (pronoun) goes before the verb, replacing à + people entirely — don't keep à.

  • Je parle à leurs.Je leur parle.

Don't confuse leur (indirect object pronoun) with leurs (possessive adjective, 'their') — different words, different jobs.

Exceptions & à retenir

  • Some verbs take BOTH a direct and indirect object

donner quelque chose à quelqu'un (to give something to someone) has both: the thing (direct: le/la/les) and the person (indirect: lui/leur) — e.g. je le lui donne (I give it to him/her). Full double-pronoun order comes at B1.

  • Not every à-phrase becomes lui/leur

    à + a PLACE (aller à Paris) uses y instead (you'll meet this at A2-13), not lui/leur — lui/leur is specifically for à + a PERSON.

  • Reflexive and lui/leur don't combine at this level

Some verbs (se parler, s'écrire) already use a reflexive pronoun for 'to each other' — don't add lui/leur on top; that's an advanced double-object structure for later.

Astuces & mémo

  • Test: does the verb need à before the person (parler À quelqu'un, not parler quelqu'un)? → indirect object → lui/leur.
  • lui is genuinely ambiguous (him OR her) — that's normal, context or the wider sentence clarifies it.
  • Learn the fixed list of à-verbs (parler à, téléphoner à, donner à, écrire à, dire à, demander à) as a set — they're the verbs that trigger lui/leur.
