The verb avoir

Le verbe avoir

A1fr25 min

What you'll learn

  • Say what you have and your age
  • Choose between être and avoir
  • Use everyday avoir expressions

Tips for this lesson

  • Age = avoir: j'ai 20 ans, never 'je suis 20 ans'.
  • Hunger, cold, fear = avoir: j'ai faim / froid / peur.
  • je + ai always contracts to j'ai.
Step 1 of 6
1Reading

In context

Read. Every form of avoir is in bold — notice how often it replaces English "to be".

J'ai un frère et deux chats. Tu as quel âge ? J'ai vingt ans. Aujourd'hui il a faim et nous avons soif. Ils ont une grande maison à Nice. Moi, j'ai besoin d'un café et j'ai envie d'un croissant ! Il y a un bon café juste ici.

Step 2 of 6
2The pattern

The pattern — avoir (to have)

Learn the six forms. Notice je becomes j' before a vowel. Read the tips and exceptions too.

avoir means to have, and like être it is irregular. Before a vowel, je always contracts to j' — so it is j'ai, never "je ai". The big idea: French uses avoir where English often uses to be. Your age (j'ai vingt ans — literally I have twenty years), your possessions (j'ai un frère), and how your body feels (j'ai faim / froid / peur) all use avoir. Getting this one contrast right removes the most common beginner mistake in French.

avoir faim / soifto be hungry / thirsty
avoir froid / chaudto be cold / hot
avoir peur (de)to be afraid (of)
avoir besoin deto need
avoir envie deto feel like / want
avoir raison / tortto be right / wrong

J'ai vingt ans.

I am twenty (years old).

Literally I have twenty years. Never je suis vingt ans.

Nous avons faim.

We are hungry.

Ils ont une voiture.

They have a car.

J'ai besoin d'un stylo.

I need a pen.

avoir besoin de — the de is obligatory, and de + un stays d'un.

Il y a un problème.

There is a problem.

il y a (there is / there are) is built on avoir — same word a.

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Je suis 20 ans.J'ai 20 ans.

Age always uses avoir. Literally: 'I have 20 years.'

  • Je suis faim.J'ai faim.

Hunger, thirst, cold, fear = avoir, not être.

  • Je ai un frère.J'ai un frère.

je + ai contracts to j'ai — the elision is obligatory.

  • J'ai besoin un café.J'ai besoin d'un café.

avoir besoin / envie always need de before the thing.

Exceptions & à retenir

  • de contracts before a vowel

    avoir besoin/envie de + a vowel → d': j'ai besoin d'eau, j'ai envie d'un thé. Before le/les it becomes du/des: j'ai envie du gâteau.

  • avoir builds the past tense

avoir is also the main helper for the past: j'ai mangé (I ate), il a fini (he finished). You'll learn this in A2 — for now, just master the six present forms.

  • il y a = there is AND there are

One phrase covers both: il y a une table / il y a des tables. Its negative is il n'y a pas de… — you'll meet that with negation.

  • Weather is faire, feelings are avoir

J'ai chaud = I feel hot (my body). Il fait chaud = it's hot (the weather). Don't mix a person's feeling with the weather.

Astuces & mémo

  • Chant it: ai, as, a, avons, avez, ont. The nous/vous forms (avons/avez) sound clearly different — lean on them.
  • Whenever you'd say "I am ___" in English about age, hunger, thirst, cold, heat or fear, switch to j'ai in French.
  • avoir besoin de = need, avoir envie de = feel like. Both take de — memorise them with the de attached.
  • il y a never changes for singular or plural: il y a un chat, il y a trois chats.
